Maybe for, like, one lengthy TV contract. But not for the long haul.
Set aside the obvious ethical arguments against trying to force somebody to join something they don't want to join. I never understand why people want to make Notre Dame change in a way so fundamental as to permanently compromise the very thing that makes them NOTRE DAME, and think that in the process of doing that we are somehow going to benefit as though we have partnered with that idealized version. It won't be the same Notre Dame.
The current relationship is just about the perfect way to partner with Notre Dame and still get the benefits of them remaining that idealized version. And it's amazing for Virginia Tech. We're playing them in true home/away games the perfect amount of the time: considerably more often than we play the ACC Atlantic teams but not so often that we get sick to death of them.
If we somehow forced ND to join the ACC, you know what they would be 30 years from now? Another ACC school.
